Get to grips with Raw editing
January 10, 2008
If you’re serious about digital photography then you may well shoot raw. Once you go down the raw route it becomes a minefield of which software to use, which settings to tweak, when to make edits, how to make edits. If you’re not careful then your head could explode.
If you don’t want that to happen and you shoot raw and own a copy of Photoshop CS3 then go and get “Photoshop CS3 RAW: Get the Most Out of the RAW Format with Adobe Photoshop, Camera RAW, and Bridge” (M Aaland)if you need convincing (or need a similar book for Lightroom) then read on.
Mikkel Aaland is an award winning photographer who has been shooting digitally since about 1980 when he interviewed Ansel Adams. And yes, I bet he drops that into conversation at every chance he gets. I would. However, his true talent is for simplifying complex subjects into simple, easy to follow text.
This should be required reading for anybody wanting to get the maximum quality out of their digital files.

“Photoshop Lightroom Adventure” (M Aaland)
A year or so is a l-o-n-g time in digital photography and you may think there’s nothing to learn from this 2006 book on Lightroom. Mikkel was one of the original Alpha testers for Lightroom and as such was “forced” to travel to Iceland, take some pictures and edit them using Lightroom. This book is the story of their trip.
The book may only cover the software up to beta 4 but you’ll learn all sorts about Lightroom, professional image editing and processing and sharing images.
You can also check out some Aaland’s pictures from the trip in his Lightroom web gallery.
